Keegan Hirst’s Next Step Journey

Keegan came to me wanting to improve his body composition, as many do

But, the thing is, Keegan is not your average client

Well, he is, and he’s a great guy, but he’s also a professional rugby league player

So the fact I received the enquiry was a bit surprising anyway

Surely these guys have pro nutritionists and S&C coaches in their corner, right?

Well, the thing is, Keegan had heard of me from a fantastic recommendation from Sam Wright at CrossFit Utopia

He had heard I was THE guy to go to for nutrition advice

Well that instantly added the pressure

Keegan wanted to get into fantastic shape for a photo shoot

The only catch was

We couldn’t affect his rugby performance

Big challenge!

However, through some careful programming and consultations, we found the right balance between being in a calorie deficit and having enough fuel for games

Keegan actually said he felt better playing than ever before

However, I’ll let him tell you the rest

Can you describe your 1-2 top goals when we began working together?

“Get photoshoot ready. Increase my strength, particularly in some CrossFit exercises that aren’t my forte.”

Can you describe any reservations that you had before we started working together?

“I was a little apprehensive about you being able to work around rugby and the variety of my training/routine”

Can you explain how I was able to help you with these reservations?

“You listened and understood, then worked a solution around it. Fantastically well, I have to say.”

Can you list your achievements with training so far?

“Got in probably the best shape of my life for the photoshoot. Increased my strength, particularly at pull-ups etc. Learned a few CrossFit manoeuvres that I couldn’t do before. Pretty much nailed a pistol squat.”

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

“At every point along the way Jonny has been understanding, compassionate, listened and adapted my training and nutrition to not only suit my goals but to tie in with a very hectic lifestyle. He’s been a fantastic coach and I’d recommend him to anyone. He’s one of the good guys.”
