As a busy professional looking to progress in both strongman and CrossFit performance, Matt came to me looking to improve his strength while losing a bit of body fat.
We discussed the importance of having different phases of nutrition to suit his goals, and so initially focused on fat loss. Before a competition we would alter his approach to make sure he was adequately fuelled and prepared.
Through this process, Matt’s weight didn’t change a great deal, but he did reduce his waist and stomach measurements significantly.
Just more proof that you shouldn’t rely on the scale as your only metric for body fat loss.
Now Matt has the tools to sustain his results aesthetically and continue to make progress with his performance, because I taught him what he needs to know.

Keegan came to me wanting to improve his body composition, as many do.
But, the thing is, Keegan is not your average client.
Well, he is, and he’s a great guy, but he’s also a professional rugby league player.
So the fact I received the enquiry was a bit surprising anyway.
Surely these guys have pro nutritionists and S&C coaches in their corner, right?
Well, the thing is, Keegan had heard of me from a fantastic recommendation from Sam Wright at CrossFit Utopia.
He had heard I was THE guy to go to for nutrition advice.
Well that instantly added the pressure.
Keegan wanted to get into fantastic shape for a photo shoot.
The only catch was, we couldn’t affect his rugby performance.
However, through some careful programming and consultations, we found the right balance between being in a calorie deficit and having enough fuel for games.
Ben is a 27-year-old roofer who came to me wanting to perform better while losing weight. The Holy Grail of fitness it seems. He wanted to lose stomach fat, not feel embarrassed with his shirt off, and to “look like he actually trained”. However, his gym performance was also important to him. Although the fat loss was his main goal, he wanted to do this sustainably while building new habits and without affecting his lifting and CrossFit performance.
Ben became a VIP client of mine working solely on nutrition, and the results definitely speak for themselves! During his time with Next Step, Ben lost around 4kg of body fat while improving his performance in the gym, just like he had hoped for. What we did was ensure he was eating enough calories on training days, while creating a bit more of a deficit on rest days. We also adjusted through the week if there were social events or nights out planned so that he could have the best of both worlds.
